This course will teach you:

In this course, you will learn programming through Python; to process datasets, and solve quantitative problems. Programming is the cornerstone of any computational profession: e.g., data analysts, machine learning engineers, web designers, or researchers. If you follow a technically-inclined Master program, it will also be an essential tool for your Master thesis. Python is a simple, no-frills programming language that can be learned quickly, and drives many libraries with more advanced functionalities than Python’s standard library.

<aside> ‼️ Note that there is considerable overlap between the material covered in the Data Processing course and the pre-master course Programming & Algorithmic Thinking. However, the difference in examination is enough so that students who pass Programming & Algorithmic Thinking can still take Data processing for credit in the DS&S program (this would then fulfill a Research Skills requirement of the program).

🍎 Course Instructors

I'm an assistant professor at CSAI, Tilburg University, and also lecture for JADS. My research focuses on privacy and (user-centered) security in Machine Learning (predominantly for language), and I am part of the Tilburg Algorithm Observatory.

Hence, I'm more generally interested in the effect of intelligent systems on our lives; systems that uncover our personal information, monitor and change our behavior, subtly restrict our exposure to information, and treat us unfairly.

In addition to Data Processing, I teach Language & AI for the Bachelor Data Science at the Eindhoven University of Technology. I previously taught Data Mining, Spatio-temporal Data Analysis, and Text Mining in context of Tilburg's Data Science Master.
